The Guardians of the Lagoon – The Story of the Shellfish Gatherers of Óbidos
Share
Roots that come from the sea
The Óbidos Lagoon is one of the last strongholds of artisanal shellfish gatherers in Portugal. Their craft, passed down from generation to generation, dates back to the times when fishermen from Varna would migrate seasonally to these waters, building their temporary huts on the shore.
Time has passed, but the essence remains. With their boats gliding gently over the water, the shellfish gatherers continue to fight against adversity – silting, the proliferation of silt and climate change that put the renewal of the lagoon at risk. Despite everything, their dedication does not waver.
A tribute in the form of clothing
At Bestland, the Óbidos Lagoon is our greatest inspiration. We created the "Bateira" hoodie to celebrate this tradition and those who, with calloused hands and resilient hearts, keep the lagoon's identity alive.
Each piece we design reflects our love for this unique place. Wearing Bestland means taking a piece of the Óbidos Lagoon and its history with you.
